Hello.
My name is Sarah. I'm 5'1" and weigh around 183. I have no one supporting me as I begin my new eating lifestyle (tomorrow morning!) so I'm hoping that signing up here and at FS will help. I'll be doing a HFLC diet with an initial net carb goal of 25,a calorie count around 1300, and specific protein/fat gram goals. I'm hopeful this will be a diet I can make a lifestyle. My weight loss goal is 58 pounds.

Yes, the main thread for the month is kinda where we all hang out. lol You can post anywhere but that is our goto spot.
In the art and science of LC living it says to count total carbs. 50 to 60 g of carbs is the point that the kidneys begin to retain water. Therefore we shoot to stay under 50g of total carbs. Some people stay lower for different reasons. Some stay under 30 because going higher in carbs causes them to have cravings.

Is the main thread for just chatting/daily updates/questions? Also, why total carbs instead of net? Is that easier? More effective? Yes to all that but as Cheryl said you can create a thread for various subjects if you like. The reason for total carbs vs net carbs is here: nkevolution.freeforums.net/thread/22/nutritional-ketosis...and the 50g (10g cushion) limit is set out in the book that blurb comes from.

Hello all. I found you from FatSecret and I think I need additional support. I have a LC/HF WOE/WOL. I'm trying my darnedest to stick with. I am 41 years old, 5'6" and my heaviest weight was 277 January 2012 when I started my journey. I lost 33 pounds in 8 months, fell off the wagon and regained 31 of those pounds back with in 6 months. Obviously my old way of eating simply will not do! I have restarted May 21, 2013 at 275. I currently weigh 264.4. I currently count NC so it may take a while to change my thought patterns. I have a daughter who is pre-teen and "plump". I really want to be a role model for her! Plus I want to prove to my low self esteem that I am worth the effort!! I usually have support from my DH though he doesn't eat my way. But my young Son wants me to stay the same as I am "the perfect Mommy hug size". Aww! I will repost to the current thread as well.

I'm 29 I have/had struggled with anorexia for 12 years. I was doing the best mentally/physically last year, but have recently (past few months) have started to struggle again. I have managed to stay out of the hospital/treatment for more than 2 years now, and would like to keep it that way. However, I am over my comfort zone in terms of weight and it is making me go actually insane and want to relapse into anorexic behaviors. (By the way, I know this isn't an eating disorder support group/not a professional treatment center--that doesn't matter. I do have a medical doctor and therapist, etc etc) SO, my desire now is to lose weight in a healthier way. I know how to restrict my calories, blah blah blah. Although I was at a weight that was dangerously low for my height, I would often binge and purge as well, so in trying not to relapse into unhealthy behaviors I also have to watch out for not doing those behaviors as well as not completely starving/overexercising <--though the latter shouldn't be a problem since I'm completely out of shape now, ha :/)
ANYWAY, this brings me to my desire to be able to not use disordered behaviors and optimally burn fat as opposed to "just lose weight as much as possible". My body has lost a lot of muscle mass over the years and I am not overweight but I am VERY "flabby" (trust me, this is not the eating disorder speaking.)
Throughout my eating disorder I did not count macros other than calories, and aimed to increase protein and not eat carbohydrates other than vegetables (which I ate A LOT of), but I never tried to go into ketosis as such. Who knows if I ever was - doubtful as even at my sickest I didn't have an abnormally low body fat % that you'd expect for that weight. My lowest weight has been 80 (2007, 2008, 2011) and my highest weight has been 160 (2004) I am 5'5-5'6. In the past few years since hospitalization I have maintained 110-120, but now I am really struggling with being 130-135. I know that doesn't sound like much and I know it's not an objectively high weight, but it is very hard for me.
So for the past week I've struggled with doing keto on/off, I normally "relapse" into major bingeing on carbs the next day. I think I'm finding it so hard to make it through more than one or two days with no carbs because of my natural tendency to restrict my calories and avoid higher fat/calorie foods such as cheese and red meat. I'm trying to be more flexible with this...
Anyway, hi. I joined because I guess it'd be nicer to talk to people who are doing similar things with a ketogenic diet than to just look up information to read on an impersonal website. :-)

Are the doc and therapist aware that you are going to try to lose a little weight? Have you read up a little on keto living? I've interacted with a few other people that have prior history with ED and they have said that this way of eating can be a trigger because it is so easy to get really wrapped up in logging food, weighing in and micro managing macros. I only mention it so you can be aware of it and guard against it. Join us on the main thread: nkevolution.freeforums.net/thread/150/nk-december-2013-version

Thanks clueless and reddarin. Reddarin - good question, thanks for your concern.. my goal isn't to count so much, honestly, which could be both a good and a bad thing - I want to just eat as low carb as possible -- which is kind of extreme but also not obsessive/compulsive in terms of rules and weighing. I feel like I can do a lot better with "eating intuitively" on this approach as opposed to caloric restriction per se. I fi know I'm eating for a state of ketosis, I won't feel the urge to write everything down. People have suggested MyFitnessPal and such, and that just does not appeal to me at all.

You can do NK while eating at or below 50 grams of carbs a day. That may a lot easier than no carbs. Have you listened to any podcasts or read any books by Julia Ross? They may be helpful. She has some great info about supplements that may help to build your body back up and help with carb craving.

I think you can do it laissez faire as long as you are conscientious about keeping total carbs low every day. It isn't that hard to keep up with once you get into the grove of it and keep your wits about you.

I've been LCHF about a year now. I am about to begin testing again via blood meter to know where I am in ketosis, or get back to it is probably more like it. I am interested in NK because of the great feeling and health benefits more than any weight loss which has alluded me to date with NK. I lost about 30 pounds over two years using HCG. Last year, after reading lots at eatingacademy.com, I have been chasing NK. I have been in it, but in recent months haven't been tracking it at all so unsure of what is happening officially. Ketone strips for the meter to arrive next week. I rarely eat more than 30g carbs a day. I don't struggle with wanting sugar or carbs at all. If I over eat it is protein. I like to eat. I use coconut oil lots and MCT oil, too. I love dairy but don't know how it affects me particularly for NK. I am not eating all that much of it at the moment. What an adventure! Glad to find a place where NK is the point.

clueless - no, will check it out, thanks!
reddarin - I know I can intuitively avoid simple carbohydrates, but one habit or behavior that I anticipate is going to be hard for me to break is to drastically cut down on my amount of vegetables (and i already don't eat starchy ones: faves are bell peppers, green beans, romaine, cucumber, radishes..) and not bingeing on VEGETABLES. Yep, vegetables. Due to both a natural love of veggies and years of using extremely large quantities to fill me up on a low amount of calories, even when I am not entrenched in anorexia, my natural inclination is to eat gigantic salads. I guess I could try redoing the salads to be heavier protein/fat and much less veg... For the first few days to ease into this, To be honest I don't know if that's a better approach as opposed to just initially cutting out all vegetables--i know that is ridiculous and unhealthy / unnecessary and not my intention in the long run, i'm talking about trying to figure out what will be easiest for me on days in week 1.
Much like a bread or pasta addict trying to figure out if they should limit their intake or just cut out entirely out of fear that that 1 piece of bread will turn into the whole loaf, i honestly face this challenge with vegetables! will a normal/small portion of romaine turn into 4 entire heads of it? This is going to be difficult, as well as adjusting my long held eating disorder "fear foods" such as cheese, whole eggs, and red meat.
That being said, it just dawned on me that if i could look at this much like how I coped with the anxiety in treatment. Hell, if i made it through that his is nothing to adapt to. as "an experiment: ie, i have nothing to lose by TRYING, if it doesnt work i can go back to doing what i was doing which was making me miserable anyway"

How many carbs/day are you shooting for? Fifty grams of carbs in vegetables can be quite a lot if you choose the right ones. I am a firm believer that the food must be enjoyed mostly in order for a way of eating to be successful over the long term. I encourage you to fiddle around with your favorite calorie/carb counter to figure out how you can do that.

Hell, if i made it through that his is nothing to adapt to. as "an experiment: ie, i have nothing to lose by TRYING, if it doesnt work i can go back to doing what i was doing which was making me miserable anyway" I hear ya. I went LC back in August of 2011 after reading Why We Get Fat. Just before going LC back then I was eating one to two loaves of french bread a day and I remember trying to figure out how to include french bread in my menu lol. In fact, I fell off plan within a few weeks because my Mom went into the hospital and the doc wasn't exactly reassuring about her survivability for the surgery she had to have (because of her age and being over weight). I pigged out on carbs until she got out of the hospital and for a while afterwards. Then I read Wheat Belly. I started that book predisposed to tear it to shreds in a review I was going to do for it. I always thought gluten-free was a bunch of hooey black helicopter baloney. By page 50 I was wheat-free and that set me free. I went back to LC. I dropped wheat and wheat containing foods like a hot potato and never looked back. For me the deciding factor was how sick wheat made me. Dr. Davis could have been describing me as a case study when he was describing the effect wheat has on some people. The hunger roller coaster is what brought me into the wheat-free fold but what keeps me here is finally being free from constant headaches, heartburn, joint pain and sinus problems plus the hunger/appetite thing. So my advice is always to go cold turkey on wheat and foods that contain wheat. The veggies you might try tapering off of just because of the emotional connection. I'd probably formalize it since you are strongly tethered to them. Like, okay, x amount of veggies on days one and two, then y amount on days three and four, etc. And eat the amount you set your goal at even if you feel good about eating less that day. The strength is in the structure.

I think that like many on this forum, my weight loss history has been up and down, up and down, up and down, ad nauseum. But I will start with the past 15 years. I went on Atkins and lost 40 pounds down to around 130, but I started gradually gaining again. Eventually I was up to 190 and knew I had to do something. They even have a contest here every year for Miss Big Big Island (had to be 200 pounds or more)! I didn't want to be a contender!
I tried WW and lost 39 pounds, became a lifetime member and was even a leader for a few years. When they went to the new program of giving fruits and most vegetables zero points, I started to gain again. I do best on 20-25 carbs a day, so I'm sure it was the extra fruit that caused it. Even 40 carbs a day seems like too much. I'm still a full-time tenured prof and need to keep up my energy level, which goes down when I am not at my best weight.
I have been around 152 (give or take a pound) for the past year and cannot seem to get any lower. I also discovered that over the years, I have lost a few inches in height. At (now) 5'3" I need to weigh less than 150 and I am uncomfortable at my current weight. I would like to get to 135-140. That's not a huge weight loss, but right now, seeing my weight go down at all would be a joy! My best weight in the past has been around 125, but I would look like a wrinkled up old prune if I got to that again.
This time I plan to stick with the Low Carb/Moderate Protein/High Fat plan because I know it works and I feel the best. The hardest part for me will be to 1) avoid looking at the calorie count and 2) getting enough fiber. I'm happy to have found this forum for the support.

This time I plan to stick with the Low Carb/Moderate Protein/High Fat plan because I know it works and I feel the best. The hardest part for me will be to 1) avoid looking at the calorie count and 2) getting enough fiber. I'm happy to have found this forum for the support. Hi there lavalilly and welcome to our forum "Miss Big Big Island" lol there is something wonderful about that contest sticking the thumb in the eye of rail thin super models representing attractiveness. "When they went to the new program of giving fruits and most vegetables zero points," That is very interesting. I actually did WW for a while back in the early 90's and I remember fruits not being a "free" food back then. The plant-based crowd performed a successful peaceful coup? I bet there was a big internal struggle when that happened. What a shame. I know WW helped a lot of people lose weight. "2) getting enough fiber" This is not too much of an issue as long as you drink enough water and eat enough fat. Cheryl ( clueless) has had good results with the inclusion of flax in her menu but I don't think she eats all that much of it in grams. Someone on the SparkPeople Ketosis board mentioned it and I thought I'd check it out. I think I'm going to like it here, even though I tend not to write on most boards.

I'm with Lavalily.....found you from our Sparkpeople Keto group. Very glad to find you!
I'm Kristin. Been LC for several years, gluten-free for nearly three years. I go in and out of ketosis...mostly b/c everyone in my life - in person and on-line - are very uneducated about NK and I find it a lonely world. I feel better and am a much happier person when I follow NK though. I am very happy to have found this forum.
I have about 25 lbs to lose right now....
