Hia vwaggs, Glad you joined. I have been doing NK since October. I feel off a bit around Christmas but have been back strict to NK since January. I never feel the urge to cheat or have any cravings, ever. I do sometimes get really hungry at TOM, but haven't this month yet. It is the first time in my life that I have not worried about food or had cravings. NK is the easiest WOE I have ever been on. It is freedom from hunger and cravings. I love it. Before LC my energy was nonexistent, it took me about a month before I started to get my energy back. I also had headaches a lot but I didn't know broth would help with the headaches back then.

Hope I'm doing this right. Or at the right place. Not the sharpest tack in the pack when it comes to computers and taking the time to read things through.
My name is Kathy. I live in Pennsylvania. I am a chunk. Have always been a chunk, but got really chunky when I hit 246 October, 2011. Hormones the lousy little buggers. Found a couple of docs who have worked with me and lost 60 lbs. HOWEVER... there is this wall in front of me which is preventing me from losing and I'm actually gaining now.
I'm hearing, you're not eating enough protein, not exercising enough, exercising too much, turning into muscle that's why you're gaining, blah blah blah. I'm sure you get the picture. I'm frustrated.
So, 2 wonderful folks from NK invited me here. And here I be. Needing a quiet place to come to in order to get an education in NK and LC and to get in gear with continued weight loss. Aiming for 150 or lower. If at all possible. But would be tickled with 150.
Fingers crossed!!!

I'm an old hippie. So, anything with major bass and lead spins my wheels. Love Cream, Zeppelin, ZZ Topp, and adore Queen. I have been exercising with them for the past 2 years. And so many others. I love anything from the late 60's and 70's. Guess that kind of puts an age to me.
I'll be posting pictures of various musicians I saw at concerts in my avatar. Until I get the nerve to take a picture of myself. Very camera shy.

Hi! My name is Vicki and I am a mom of 2 great kids and I teach fifth grade. I have tried every diet from Kimkins (remember that fiasco??) to hCG. I have found the ONLY way to control my cravings and feel really great is to be in NK. I cannot eat any fruit either which pretty much sucks. I eat Paleo and try to stick with grass fed, free range, and organic veggies. My husband keeps trying to do this with me but can't get past those first few days of feeling like crap. I am trying to see why I am tired all the time and I have even started make my own skin care products to reduce the toxic load. I know this can take time but I am in it for the long hall. I am only on day 5 and I am hoping that I will have the energy I am looking for after I become keto adapted in a few weeks. Glad to be be here and looking forward to "meeting" you all! Hey Vicki !

Hi all, OK, so I've finished reading ASLCL by P&V. Basically to do NK, I need to eat under 50 total carbs, figured my protein need at 102 g. Any other requirements to do NK correctly?

LCer That is pretty much how I do it. Just eat to my protein needs, stay under 50g carbs and fill in the rest of my calories with fat. I take Magnesium, potassium and get my salt in with broth or the shaker.

Thanks for the speedy reply! How many mg of magnesium and potassium do you take per day? I already drink the broth, but saw in another thread to add HWC to it. Going to try that this AM.

Yummy, HWC in the broth is so good. Ok I take 800 mg a day of Magnesium oxide. Some take Magnesium Citrate but I can't take it, it makes me run to the bathroom all day. You may want to play around with you magnesium and start at a lower dose, then work your way up. I take 3 of the potassium 99m (from 595mg potassium gluconate). I started out with 1 potassium and worked my way up to 3 a day.

Thanks, I'll have to pick up some mag oxide. Mag Citrate, isn't that what you have to take before a colonoscopy? That really cleans you out! I know you probably don't drink the whole bottle at once like then... I usually eat an avocado (800 mg potassium) a day, so I think I'm good on potassium until they are not longer in season and cheaper. Then I'll start with the supplements.
Any idea on how many calories I should be eating?

I have tried but I just cannot tolerate it yet.

Well, reddarin (Darin) is better at telling calories. I would probably just start by dropping your carbs to under 50 a day and eat at your protein level. It takes about 6 weeks to get adapted. So I would eat at my 1800 calories for a while and just be patient and let the magic happen. Then when you get adapted you can start to look at you calories and move things around a bit. Nk just kills your appetite once you are adapted so there will be no struggling to change calories. Are you pretty satisfied at 1800 calories a day? Darin may have a better idea so I tagged him to the thread.

Thanks, yes, I've been satisfied at 1800. I'm off to get my hair cut and pick up some mag oxide, so I'll check back later to see what Darin say. Thanks for your help.

Yes, just keep your current calorie level, drop total carbs under 50g, try to eat your protein grams goal and see how things go for a couple of weeks. After you have been on plan for a bit we can tweak what you are doing. How long have you been stalled with vanilla LC?

For what it's worth, I find that sticking to my protein and carb numbers and adding fat throughout the meals to satisfaction keeps my calories where they need to be to lose.
Another point is that if you use the BMI calculators and whatnot, they'll give you what you need to maintain. I'm losing instead of maintaining, so I try to keep calories at a deficit.
And then there's the notion of stored body fat being burned, so it counts as intake---that's why a NK plan might look high protein, which it's not--- it's moderate.
90 g protein +35 g carb +100 g fat = 360 cal + 140 cal+900 cal = 1400 cal That's 25% cal from protein. But add in the burned body fat (call it 400 cal), and the percentage of protein drops to 20%, which is in line with NK eating.
I stole this thought from Phinney, can't quite remember where.... I heard him say a NK plan can be up to 40% protein if the caloric deficit/body fat burn is high enough... my body fat guestimate example is probably quite low.

He says it in the Living book for sure. I think he also reiterates it on the LTS podcast too.

How long have you been stalled with vanilla LC? Over a year, been tweaking with increasing/lowering net carbs, cutting out dairy, exercising more, etc., but didn't think to get back below 50 total carbs for ketosis to kick back in, duh. Have been eating at minimum of 60% fat. Total carbs have been bouncing under and over 50. I'll keep it under 50 and see how it goes. Thanks for all you help.

Carbs are half of it but moderate protein is the other half so be sure to keep an eye on how you are doing with protein grams. There are other interesting tweaks that can be made depending on the situation but it's best to get macros right first. I was stalled for months and months at 205 till I found NK
