Wanted a pop last night but didn't want the caffeine in a diet coke so I reached for a Sprite. Not even thinking about it! Duh! I need to remember to be more conscious in my choices. Didn't weigh in again. Today is going to be a good day. Happy Friday everyone. I checked and it had about 26g of carbs so if you were at 20 or 30 for the day when you drank it there wasn't really much damage done. Even if you were closer to 50 when you drank it one day at 75g won't matter much in the long run.

The roads were wet but not icy when I drove in. It isn't nearly as bad here as the DFW area. Just very cold! Hopefully it won't rain this afternoon. The bad thing about living way out here is our city is too small to sand/clear streets like the one I live on. If you can make it the half-mile or so to the main road you are usually good to go though.

I stopped at Target on the way home to get a few things, and they had sugar free Pumpkin Spice syrup in the coffee aisle. They also had the usual flavors like caramel and vanilla, but I haven't seen a SF pumpkin spice anywhere else.

Great article. I seriously considered a bacon snack late in the evening to celebrate what he was saying lol. It is very intriguing to me that despite my 2g+/kg of protein *and* high calorie intake I continue to trend down in weight.

I'm reading Lagakos' book, The Poor, Misunderstood Calorie, and it has more information on why protein is so important during weight loss. It frustrates me to no end to see people latching on to the idea that high or even moderate protein intake has the same effect as eating bread or cake. ugh. I'm so glad I came across his blog before I fell into that mindset. It isn't just mainstream CICO folks promoting less protein, I'm also seeing this nonsense from LC bloggers.

Well done When I first went Gluten free 16 or 17 years ago I broke over and had a piece of cake, My back hurt so bad I could hardly walk and I threw up for hours. Pretty good motivation to stay away from wheat. You will feel all better in a day or 2.

I'm so glad I came across his blog before I fell into that mindset. It isn't just mainstream CICO folks promoting less protein, I'm also seeing this nonsense from LC bloggers. He has an interesting blog. Let us know how you like the book The low protein thing is awful. There was a lot of that sort of thinking on the evil thread on the evil forum. The logic chain seemed to always resolve itself like this: "If reducing it a little is good then reducing it a lot *must* be better". Substitute calories, carbs, protein, or fat or a combination for the word "it". Despite the fact that the author of the NK book, Phinney, directly said that .8g/kg is not enough protein for LC [which is a superset of NK]. One time I mentioned that the drawback to a day or more of fasting was immediate loss of muscle mass. I was challenged on it so I transcribed and quoted Dr. Phinney from the LTS podcast. The person that challenged me dismissed it out of hand and demanded a link to the study lol. I was like, well, I guess Dr. Phinney is a liar in your opinion because *I* am not the one that said it, I'm just repeating, word for word, what the author of Atkins, Living and Performance said. Then! Another person was aghast that I'd tell anyone they'd lose muscle mass fasting. Why? Because it might discourage them from trying a fast!!! W T F. I was like, hey, *I'd* much rather make an informed decision about fasting than have you or someone else decide for me that I don't need to know that very important fact about fasts. And Phinney didn't mince words either. He said that you can lose 1/4 pound to 1 pound !!! of lean tissue in the first 24 hours. From what Phinney has said on the LTS podcast, he and Lagakos don't appear to agree on several things. Gluconeogenesis in particular. At the 39 minute mark on that podcast Phinney says any excess protein will get converted to glucose. He revises that a bit a minute or two later by saying excess protein will be used for energy but I do not think he was walking back what he said about the glucose conversion. A protein expert that JM interviewed (can't remember his name off hand) said that anything less than 30g of protein per dose would *not* be used for hypertrophy. He was adamant. Well, the guy that runs a site called Run Keto asked Lagakos about that without mentioning who'd said it and Lagakos said it could not be true. He reasoned that if you were low on protein then your body is not going to waste the little bit you eat. Made sense to me. But so did the other guy lol. That sort of contradiction is why I generally tell some one starting LC to get a book, like Atkins, and do a defined plan. You can figure it out and roll your own plan and be successful, that is what I did back in 2011, but man it takes a mountain of effort to sort through the information and try to make intelligent decisions about who to believe.

Amen.....truer words were never written. I'm far better off now these past 8 yrs then I was before and were it not for my internet connection and all the vast information "out there" I would still be flat on my back unable to do anything. I've recovered some health and now maybe found my answer to releasing weight. However, I find that I question EVERYTHING now as I never did before. Someone says something, get's my mind whirling and I seek the truth.......sometimes I think this is a bad thing as it has become obsessive for me to know the truth, no matter the subject. It is exhausting, but I can't seem to stop.... I'm totally amazed at how many diseases, illness, etc, can be reversed through nutritional means and people suffer needlessly because their "doctor" is clueless how to help them. I wish the world would create a network of true healers that could spread the word to the hopeless cases and maybe the people would start to demand change in the pharmaceutical pushing doctors out there. I truly believe that more people are harmed from these drugs than helped. Through nutrition, most disease can be avoided......ok, temporarily off my soap box....

Weigh in today 148.8. The cold moved to my chest today and my neck is very sore. Maybe this will clear up pretty soon. That last one stayed in my head for weeks. Hopefully when I get this cold on out of the way I will see a loss.

Hopefully when I get this cold on out of the way I will see a loss. Please take 1 gram of good quality vitamin C every hour or two until you feel some relief. When I get the first hint of anything, I take 1 gram every hour I'm awake until I know I'm on the mend. Then I take 1 gram every 3 hrs as it doest stay in our bodies much longer than that. The worse thing that can happen if you take more than your body can tolerate is you get loose stool. I buy Dr's Best Quali-C as the vitamin C is NOT from China, but Scotland. You've had this crud too long. I know you have little ones, but all the more that you need to boost your immune system on a regular basis.....

I finished the book and will admit that my eyes glazed over at some of the more scientific explanations, but it's very interesting and full of references to various studies. Here's a couple of points he made about protein and reducing carbs:
Weight loss reduces muscle mass. If one reduces absolute protein intake, a disproportionate loss of muscle mass occurs. The absolute amount of protein in the diet supports an absolute amount of muscle mass. If you reduce protein intake, muscle tissue is degraded.
More energy is required to digest and assimilate dietary protein than carbohydrates. Conversely, reducing carbohydrate intake by 100 kilocalories causes a relatively greater energy deficit than reducing protein intake by 100 kilocalories (with protein, some of the calorie deficit would be offset by the energy saved by not digesting and assimilating the protein). The nutrients may produce the same amount of heat in a bomb calorimeter, but they do not provide the same amount of energy to the body…don’t eat less protein.
Absolute protein refers to the number of grams, not the percentage of calories that come from protein.
ETA: Lagakos recommends protein intake that is equal to LBM plus a little more if you are trying to lose weight, to prevent muscle loss. He suggests that a 200 lb person should be eating a minimum of 100 g protein per day. If I followed his recommendation, I would be eating 90-100 g protein. That is very close to the NK formula of 1.5 to 2.2 g protein per kg of my goal weight.

It would appear we're all upper's today. Any losers? or did I miss someone? I'm holding steady at 172. I've been eating higher calorie (for me) over the last week; averaging 1600 per day. I might continue this for another week to see what happens.
