Weigh in today 149.6 Cheryl, about when did you start doing your HIT routine? Your ~150 set point is similar to my 205 set point. I bobbed down and back up and that was that for a long time. But your situation has at least three key differences: 1) your hormonal environment is very different vis-a-vis male/female, of course, and your thyroid is whacked whereas mine isn't as far as I know, 2) your set point hit while following NK and I was not, 3) you are doing HIT and I was not. To my thinking, #1 is the biggie since it is the reason men tend to have an easier time losing weight simply because of related inflammation issues. I know you are doing #3 as well as can be expected (me too) short of actually having a personal trainer that is properly trained in HIT. I believe #3 is a positive towards breaking a set point versus doing nothing or the awful mainstream exercise paradigm (which is a negative, a huge negative). Number 2 is interesting. NK gets a lot of play as a stall buster but I wonder about that given your experience. Did it really break my stall or was my time simply served and I got out on good behavior? Same for the lemony snicket troll on the evil forum. Did it actually break her stall or was it simply a matter of time served? Further, when a person stalls it is almost unavoidable that they become unfocused on LC to some degree so is it NK that broke the stall or is it refocusing on what they are doing? Outliers like Jimmy Moore run counter to that idea since he was high profile and it is very unlikely that he became unfocused if for no other reason than his popular blog kept him on the straight and narrow (his wild tweaking excepted). That sounds bad, NK not preventing a stall, but I think there is a good chance that it might have done something much more important - prevent a gain. JM reached his set point, started regaining weight and put back on quite a few pounds. Despite his frantic efforts to stop it or reverse it. NK reversed that for him but had he been following NK before the gain began he probably would have stalled and not gained all that weight back. At which point NK would have been blamed for not being an effective weight loss tool lol. What is the first thing someone does when they stall? They reduce their already low calorie level which increases cortisol and inflammation. Step two, usually in tandem, they ramp up the exercise because CICO sez balance your energy to enter the promised land. But all a lot of crappy mainstream exercise does is ramp up inflammation along with cortisol. Alright, that last part doesn't really have anything to do with anything, I just threw it in to annoy the mainstream exercise mafia trolls.

Good morning. Here are my numbers for yesterday. I crunched the numbers last night and realized I was way too low again so I mixed a protein/fat snack. But I think I sabotaged myself because I ate it at 8:00 at night. Late night eating is one of my body's no-no's. Plus had 3862g sodium for the day.
Cals 1568 Fat 120.66 Carbs 45.5g Prot 69.34
B- coffee w/ HWC & CO L- Salad, beef snacks D- meatloaf, pizza, & cheese S- Tuna w/ cream cheese and green olives.
Weigh in: 270.0 for another 2.0# bump.
Should have just said F$#@ it and ate the damn Mexican food.

Just give your body a few days and be positive. It is just fluid so do not beat yourself up about the number on the scale. Hang in there and eat enough and give your body some time to get back into NK.

reddarin, My first attempt at HIT was 7/3/13. I changed my workout around and got on a true HIT workout on 8/25/13. You are very right about gaining weight. I really do believe that NK has prevented a gain for me. Before NK I really would gain for no reason and on 1200 calories. NK has done a lot more for me than just weight loss. My allergies are much better, my asthma is gone as long as I stay adapted. I am not gaining weight. My goiter has shrunk to an amazing degree. My body has no aches and pains. My energy is wonderful. My right hip and knee used to pop out of joint, (OMG that was some excruciating pain) that is nearly completely gone. All those things motivate me to stay NK adapted even more than the weight loss does.

It isn't permanent. Most of all, it isn't failure. It is simply a delay. Don't get too entangled in correlation and causality - just put one foot in front of the other and walk the path with patience.

I ate more protein at breakfast to see if that would help curb my appetite, so I can skip lunch and not feel hungry all afternoon. It seems to have helped, tho I should have gotten more fat in. It's noon here now and I'm a little hungry but it's bearable.

Thanks guys. I just needed a shot in the butt of positivity to counter act my pity party. Not sure why I'm feeling so negative. I'm staying the course. Hey we have all been there. Weight loss is a journey and it is so easy to get discouraged. That is why this group is so great. We all help each other. The CICO crowd has been so destructive to our way of thinking. There attitude is you are fat because you are stupid and lazy. They make you feel like you are to blame when ever you don't see results. They make you think you aren't exercising enough and you are eating too much and if you just work harder you will lose weight. The real truth is it takes time and sometimes the results are not as easy to see as a number on the scale. On NK and LC you can be shrinking without the scale even moving for weeks and weeks. Have faith in yourself and in NK and your body will change. For me NK seems so easy that at times it feels like I am not doing enough because weight loss should be so hard. That isn't the case. Being consistent and sticking with it is all you really have to do. You have to be patient, that is the hard part.

So when baking a low carb pizza crust, even if they say grease the pan, can you get mad at them for not emphasizing that step ENOUGH? I made it work. Glad to be loving my LC food. Pepperoni pizza-diet food!

Sounds good It's pretty darn good for instant cocoa. For some reason the fat free version has fewer carbs than the sugar free Swiss Miss. I always have to check the label because they have several varieties - the fat free is 5 carbs per serving. The cocoa doesn't mix well with hot water, so I give it a quick whirl in the blender.

Pepperoni pizza-diet food! Which LC pizza recipe did you try? I like this cream cheese based crust the most of the ones I've made. Cauliflower pizza crust is tasty but it was too soggy for me.

Morning everyone. Four days ago, my blood sugars began to rise. I've even been checking 2 hrs after meals before bed. Also, my BK numbers are falling. Something is amiss. I've been googling to see what I can find. I wanted to share what I've discovered thus far - Going very low carb – to around or below 10% of calories, or full-blown ketogenic – can induce ”physiological” insulin resistance. Physiological insulin resistance is an adaptation, a normal biological reaction to a lack of dietary glucose. Per Mark Sisson's blog - The brain must have glucose. It can use ketones and lactate quite effectively, thus reducing the glucose requirement, but at the end of the day it still requires a portion of glucose. In a low-glucose state, where the body senses that dietary glucose might not be coming anytime soon, peripheral insulin resistance is triggered. This prevents the muscles from taking up “precious” glucose that the brain requires. The brain’s sensitivity to insulin is preserved, allowing it to grab what glucose it needs from the paltry – but sufficient – levels available to it. If we didn’t become insulin resistant while eating very low carb, our brain wouldn’t be able to get the glucose it needed to keep us alive. In the end, insulin resistance on very low carb appears to be a physiological adaptation to spare glucose for the brain and prevent your muscles from gobbling it up. I see no reason to think it’s a pathological problem, especially given the droves of success stories on this site and others from people who have lost weight, torn up prescriptions, boggled the minds of doctors, and reclaimed their once-failing health through a low-carb Primal way of eating and living. I could be wrong, and time will tell, I suppose, but I doubt it.On another site I found this statement - So in conclusion, having higher blood sugar levels on a low carb diet is a consequence of killing the insulin response, which looks similar to diabetics but is actually far, far different. LINK
Last reference before I get ready for work - Dr. Seyfried says, "High blood glucose levels are associated with high fat consumption even when there are no carbohydrates in the diet. High blood glucose levels will accelerate tumor growth." from a poster on Livinlowcarbshow on an audio where Seyfried was interviewed.Ok, did another quick search and found this. I feel better now In short - Elevated non esterified fatty acids induce physiological insulin resistance and a higher than expected FBG level. A simple switch to higher carbohydrate eating (in myself) allows the normal underlying pancreatic and muscle function to show. It also fits in with the FBG of 3.5mmol/l found in the carbohydrate fuelled natives in the Kitava studies.
So do I worry about a FBG of over 5.5mmol/l?
Not while my HbA1c is 4.4%.
Looks like I'll be buying an HbA1c monitor. My tool kit is ever expanding..... LAST EDIT I promise.... This seemed like a good explanation so I'm posting it here - by Michael O'Neill While I’m not the person you should ask about anything health related, I’ve wanted an answer to this question myself. The explanation I’ve read is that after going low carb, your muscle tissue becomes insulin resistant in order to preserve serum glucose availability for the brain. If your muscle tissue did not do this, reduced availability of glucose in the serum could (theoretically) put your in dire straights if your brain can’t meet minimal demand for glucose. (Mind you, even on a zero carb diet you can meet all your glucose requirements via gluconeogenesis. The point is, your body needs a way to tell your muscle mass to stop taking all the glucose it makes. This is that way.)
Because of this physiological insulin resistance, which I should mention is a benign state that is not making your diabetic insulin resistance worse, you wouldn’t want to take an oral glucose tolerance test while you are low carbing.
If you took a glucose tolerance test while on a low carb or ketogenic diet, you would fail. If you need to take such a test (and you want it to be accurate), increase your carbohydrate intake to ~150g for a few days and then take the oral glucose tolerance test. The few days of increased carbohydrate intake will apparently let your body adapt to increased carbohydrate availability and your physiological insulin resistance will go away.
At any rate, that’s my extremely flawed, 2 minute brain dump on it based on a very limited bit of reading on the subject. For the record, I discussed my increased blood sugar with my doctor. I asked him if the explanation I gave above is the reason, and he indicated it was…but we didn’t spend a lot of time on this point.and there are lots of links in his REFERENCE section following the above. okay.....off to work!

Interesting. Please post your HbA1c when you test it KK. I was reading through the comments at this link and Peter made an observation about the issue that is, I think, the crux of the matter in this comment: LC induced IR is not a pathology. High carb induced IR is a pathology. But! It may be a distinction without a difference if the outcome is pathological. That is, relatively higher BG is not going to be an issue in isolation but other existing health conditions that are exacerbated resulting in illness/disease would make it pathological at least as a precursor.

Good morning. Happy Wednesday! Good-ish numbers yesterday. Yesterday's numbers: Cals 1630 Fat 128.39g Carbs 42.33g Prot 80.05g B-Coffee w/ HWC & CO L- Salad bar w/ ham & egg D- meat loaf & LC pepperoni pizza Weigh in this AM: 268.4 for 1.6# loss from yesterday's gain. Yup. Gain was just a back lash of carb weekend. It's coming off. I am happy I took the time to bake a LC pizza last night. Busy evening but really enjoyed the pizza. Crust was good after I scraped it off the pan. @bunniee thanks for the recipe link. I think I'll try that one next time. I'm done with the meat loaf. It was tasty but too high in carbs. Hard to find a pre-made/processed LC protein out there. chrispy Thanks for the positivity! insert code here
