I don't know if the 5,000 calorie per day experiment really proves anything for people with a healthy metabolism. I don't have the book handy but in Rethinking Thin, Gina Kolata mentions a study in which underweight male participants were given a very high calorie diet. I believe it was up to 10,000 calories. Their metabolism increased and the men gained little to no weight.
It's an interesting book that follows a study of 2 years in which participants were given either a low carb or low fat diet. By the end of the 2 year period, most of the dieters regained what they had lost regardless of which diet they were on. This echoes what I read in Jenny Ruhl's book, Diet 101. I found Rethinking Thin to be horribly discouraging at the time I read it because it seemed to have a message that if one is overweight or obese, you are doomed to stay that way. I don't agree with that now, but I think it shows that people on a weight loss journey need support and guidance.

Went up from 130.2 to 130.8 this morning, probably water weight. I've got the LC flu really bad today, which is the 5th day of strict NK, so thats to be expected.
I decided to punish myself with 40 minutes of elliptical between classes. After I was done with the elliptical, I decided to do just 8 minutes on the stair master. Figured I'd be conservative, even though I could probably bang out 20 minutes easily. HAHAHA, NOT SO MUCH. I was dizzy and dry heaving after 2 minutes and 20 seconds. LOL. Oh, I didn't eat anything today until after the gym, so it was fasted cardio.
Today: 1204 calories, 81g fat, 59g protein, 22g carbs (16 net)
B: 1 cup black coffee L: 1 oz of macadamia nuts D: Taco salad (lettuce, ground beef, flank steak, cheese, cucumbers, salsa, sour cream) DESSERT IS 8 OZ OF SAUVIGNON BLANC BECAUSE I DESERVE IT.
I'm really liking my eating patterns lately. I intermittent fast from around 5:30p-12:30p the next day (19 hrs I think). Then I eat a small snack, and a big dinner around 5-5:30. I feel like I'm eating sooo much, but still come in under calorie goals. Also keeps my mind off food.

I don't agree with that now, but I think it shows that people on a weight loss journey need support and guidance. Well, really, it doesn't prove anything about any metabolism heh. But it is interesting that the CICO zombies have to blame high fat nuts for the lack of weight gain. 3,000 calories of nuts plus 2,000 other non-nut calories equals no weight gain. Brilliant! I saw a few people that pointed out his caloric expenditure may be underestimated but even they have a hard time explaining how 5k in calories could result in a smaller waist and no weight gain to speak of. You know, what is surprising to me and it occurred to me just now, is that he isn't fluctuating much on his weigh-ins. I bet that is because his total carbs are way above the keto range since he eats 80g plus. All diets have a common problem and that is the person following them considering them to be an object or an action to be done and completed and then they go back to whatever way of eating got them fat in the first place. Very few people regain weight if they stay on the plan whatever the plan might have been. I imagine that most people have good intentions of making their plan a lifetime pursuit. Certainly that seems to be the case with most people that make "I'm back and need to lose the weight I regained" posts at LC forums. And let's face it, there is a whole lot of social pressure to not watch what you eat even by the most well meaning friends and family let alone the little problems life throws at us that derail the most steadfast careful eater.

Sorry about the bad exercise experience, but your description is funny! That taco salad sounds good.

Nope, I think I will drink some on the way to school tomorrow! I've learned that a big part of me sticking to NK is seeing that initial big loss, and drinking broth before I hit 3 days in NK means I won't lose much since I'm still running on glucose. I've gone from 138.6 to 130.8 in 5 days though, so I reckon thats the water whoosh I was looking for.

Oh, man, I'm so sorry that you guys are all experiencing bounces today. NOT because it is any indication of what's going on in the grand scheme of things, and not because it's anything that should concern you, but because I know how frustrating it is! Two weeks after my vacation (and overindulgence) I'm finally getting close to where I was, 131.8. But given the pattern, I'll probably have a bounce tomorrow, and will need to remind myself of what I just said above!

Man I am having a bad diet day. Already had at least 1300 calories. I think TOM is near. I was up eating at midnight last night. My husband came in the kitchen and started laughing at me. I was hitting the cream cheese. What am I gonna do?? Someone stop me. Do you guys think that TOM knocks you out of ketosis sometimes? I did not used to think so, but the last 2 or 3 months I have had a rough time. I feel like I could burst into tear just any second too, like a 15 year old girl on a hormonal roller coaster. Lucky for my husband he is at school today.

I started my TOM yesterday and super miserable. My WI this morning was almost 178 Always feel hungry and bingey when I start. Was quite thankful no cream cheese to be found in our home and on day 11 of being cream cheese free. I'm ready for this TOM to end and my anxiety to die down a bit from work (hopefully...) and trying to just stick to food plans. I'm grossed out by my WI's that's for sure...today has been pretty crappy. I'm not sure where I've gone wrong with my eating habits and trying to force myself to get on track and stay on track isn't working out too well for me...not tired of my lifestyle so not sure what my problem is. I've lost a good amount of weight but still overweight and no where near my fitness goals and seems like trying to get past this point is not really happening for me...really thought by now I'd be back down to 165 heading to 160, ha that'll be the day. I am going to download that fancy new spreadsheet linked earlier and sit down tonight and really write up a food/fitness plan and stop bringing $ to work so I stop having ways to get the extras like protein bars and salads from the cafe. I reallllly want to just do the M/E fast but always fail because I end up caving to coffee with either HH or HWC. So, very much feeling your pain! I'm in that whiney woe is me mood too so that doesn't help LOL...when I know I'm the only one in control of my choices yet I continue to make poor ones BOOOO
