Hi gretalyn Tai chi always makes me think of that Dream a Little Dream movie because the old guy was out in the yard doing it when the kids ran through annoying him lol. www.imdb.com/title/tt0097236/And, of course, Mel Torme's version of Dream A Little Dream Of Me. Doris Day's version is good too though.

Weigh-in this morning 179.3 for a hugeous swing back the other direction of two point six. I had three ounces of my homemade sauerkraut yesterday so I attribute it to that Seriously though, I've been averaging about 1.33 pounds a week for the last three weeks so this WI is down about .6 from the average to put it in some perspective.

I did make some changes to try to get better sleep this past week and that may have something to do with the extra weight loss.
I used to leave the hall light on at night and now I turn it off so that there is no light leaking through my door. I'd already darkened my room but I did make a big change there too. I have been using my phone, plugged in, as my clock/alarm with it propped up across the room from me so I could see it. I started just leaving the clock off at night with the phone face down which greatly increased the darkness. A side benefit of doing that is if I wake up at night I do not see the time and 'wake up' with mental calculations on how much longer I have to sleep.
Another thing I've started doing is turning most of the lights off a few hours before bed so that I am not trying to go from brightly lit surroundings to sleep 'time'.
It is hard to judge the change in sleep quality over such a short period of time but I do think I have been sleeping better this past week.

I've actually never seen that movie! I'll have to watch it. We just watched Stand By Me again this weekend, and it was the first time in ages I'd seen a Corey Feldman movie, so kind of funny that you mentioned another Corey Feldman movie.

I didn't have the intense cravings yesterday that I feared I would. Overall, it was a good day, though I didn't get around to working out. But I did exercise today. Took a "Body Combat" class for the first time ever, and it was very high-energy and fun.
My weight dropped below 130 for the first time in . . . over 15 years, I guess! I wasn't really trying for that, and I hope that it's not indicative of a loss of muscle since I stopped working out. I'm going to do weights tomorrow, and I'm sure I'm going to be quite sore afterward since its been so long.

Ah, I see. Thanks for explaining about the ketogenic ratio, Darin, and for posting about it KewlKat. Since I use MyFitnessPal to track, I'd have calculate it on my own every day -- that's not nearly as fun as just programming a spreadsheet to do it for you! I'll read that second article you linked and decide if it's worth the effort (yes, I'm being lazy!). Do you feel that knowing that number has been beneficial to you?

I'll read that second article you linked and decide if it's worth the effort (yes, I'm being lazy!). Do you feel that knowing that number has been beneficial to you? Yeah, there was a certain geeky euphoria in making the spreadsheet calculate it lol. But the formula is straight forward and you only need to internalize four numbers along with what is divided by what so doing it with a calculator every day would be easy as pie after a week or so. I have to answer that question with a qualified 'yes'. I don't think it has made a huge difference for me because I am already a confirmed keto guy in an annoying toga wearing acolyte that hands out flowers at the airport sort of way. But I do think it helps me keep my protein in line. I already keep carbs low, fat high and calories in a somewhat haphazard range so protein can be a challenge to keep moderate. I know from long use that about 1.2g/kg works for me for NK and tracking the KR helps me stay in that range and gives me a nudge to push fat grams up if needed to push up the KR. The extension I wrote for my own use with FitDay calculates the KR on the fly so when I am entering my last meal I can tweak things to push up the KR which is hand in glove with NK's focus of low carb, moderate protein and high fat. Initially I was very interested in seeing what correlations I could make from tracking KR but so far I have drawn none. Perhaps that is simply because I was already, and had been for quite some time, very carefully analyzing macros, calories, trailing weight, trends over time, life issues, etc. and the KR does not substantively add to or alter that body of data? I'll say this though. If the KR had become popular on the evil thread at the other forum it would have been yet another excuse to eat too little protein in the pursuit of low calorie LC utopia because if you are already eating very low carb and very low fat there is only one macro left to cut and they'd have taken the hatchet to protein pursuing a high KR.

I have one going right now to organize and budget my Halloween party. Excel is the best program MS has ever created hands down. When they added Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in version 4.0 they lifted the roof off and the sky was the limit. I remember in the mid-90s I got a book on Excel VBA and created a magical expense report that made doing my weekly report a thing of pure joy and happiness lol. Every week I looked forward to doing the report heh. Since I switched to Linux a while back I am currently using Libre Calc as my spreadsheet software. I like it and it works just fine but it doesn't quite have the polish of Excel. Certainly VBA is far and away better than the Libre scripting language. Or maybe I am just too used to Excel after using it for so many years for practically anything that popped up.

I can relate to the "geeky euphora" part! But, yeah, since I've been doing the ketogenic thing for quite awhile now, and feel like I've got it down pretty well, I'm not sure if I'll add this number to my journaling or not. I can see how it might be useful in the beginning, when you're just learning. And especially so if you are hesitating to eat the large amounts of fat that are necessary to make this diet work. I know that freaks some people out, so seeing the math in those circumstances might help. My very first introduction to low-carb eating (Life Without Bread, Allan and Lutz) got me over my fat phobia very quickly and easily, so it hasn't been a problem for me. And I have never understood how people (like the ones on that other board that you mentioned) even attempt to be both low-carb and low-fat. That just makes no sense to me at all.

I can see how it might be useful in the beginning, when you're just learning. That made me think of another good thing about the KR. Even as long as I've been LC I like seeing the confirmation my macros create a number well over the 1.5 threshold. And you are right, for someone new it would be nice to see the math support that you are taking the right steps towards eating ketogenic. Very similar to the reassurance you get from the protein formula in the Phinney/Volek books. I whip out the calculator and check myself on that all the time even these days.

Gretalyn it is great that you're doing so well and that you are back hanging out with us.
I use Excel and love it when someone else figures out the formulas for anything. I don't like that part and so don't do it. Well, auto-sum is easy enough.
Off for an overnight hanging with friends out of town. Funeral tomorrow for a cousin, also out of town though I will be back in my slot here tomorrow evening. Sunday I am going to be a slug.

Woke up to a 3.2 pound bounce today, so I guess that whole "dropped into the 120's" thing was a fluke. Ha! Oh well. Really, that's not a problem, because I'm quite happy in the 130-134 range.
Plus, I'm very sore from my workout, so I think the bounce may have been due to inflammation, water retention, etc.
Do you guys make a conscious effort to consume salt? I thought that the need to increase salt intake was mostly during the transition into ketosis, and after that you didn't need to worry about it so much. I'm certainly not stingy in flavoring my food with salt, but I don't really make any kind of effort to make sure I'm getting enough. And I have struggled a lot with light-headedness and muscle cramps over the last couple of years (and my blood pressure is always at the very lowest end of the normal range). After watching the videos that kewlkat posted (the conference in Australia) I'm starting to think that salt may be my problem. I have noticed that drinking some pickle juice really helps the muscle cramps! So last night before bed I drank some salty broth, and I'm going to try to remember to do that every day. What other ways would you recommend for getting more salt? I really thought that I was getting enough, but maybe I need a lot more than I realized.
On a completely unrelated note, my daughter cut her waist-length hair to chin-length yesterday to donate it to charity, for making wigs for kids who have lost their hair due to medical conditions or injuries. I'm proud of her, and she looks amazing -- older and more sophisticated, which is not necessarily what a mom wants for her 15 year old daughter, but she really does look gorgeous! She has had waist-length hair for so many years that I had come to view her hair as part of who she is. So now she's someone very different!
