What about the physical limits of protein processing? If you single dose 100g of protein for the day, can your body actually utilize it before it passes through the digestive tract? I think so. Otherwise IF would result in a pronounced loss of net muscle mass. I mean, it'd be unmistakable in a clinical setting. Also, exactly how much protein you need on any given day must be variable and therefore the body must be adaptable to handle shortages and excesses resulting from the digestive process and intake in a given time frame. Unlike fat, there is no long term storage mechanism for excess protein. The implied result has to be a fairly flexible system capable of dealing with feast/famine regarding protein. Aside from that, it seems reasonable to assume that a small meal would be digested at one speed (because of the physical quantity) and the inverse would be true - a big meal would be digested at a different, slower, speed (because of the physical quantity) [which means it'd have more exposure to the digestive process]. So there'd be a leveling out of nutrient absorption along the spectrum of quantity. That is my thinking on the issue. I could be wrong of course on the whole thing or on parts of it. This whole post, Darin, is fascinating. I will listen to Dr. Layman's podcast later today. I really like this thought that the body adapts to different size meals, just as it adapts to IF. I find it interesting how I keep finding things/thoughts that I have accepted from "them" to be true, without questioning....even though I've learned and accepted other things that would deem this thought untrue. I'm not thinking very clearly this morning, so I'm not sure if that makes sense. I'll be back on this again!!

YAY, Cheryl, for the loss today! How tall are you? I'm just wondering b/c where we are and where we are aiming to be is so similar... I'm 5'9".
My scale went down 1.8 lbs to 156.8 today. YAY! I recognize that this is probably just the inflammatory stuff going away, but my body sure loves when I eat on plan.

Just wanted to share this with all of you....My youngest son (9 years old) was going through a bit of emotional roller coaster up and down crap a couple of months ago. For me, when I was going through deep depression years ago before going low carb, I found that eating fat was key to bringing me out of it...that was, in part, the reason I found low carb to be such a positive for me. So, naturally, I hoped that adding fat to my son's diet would help to even him out emotionally. My family (husband and five kids) are not gluten free nor low carbers. They eat pretty mainstream, but with nearly all home-cooked meals and natural ingredients in their foods. My husband does not like extremes nor the mental pressure that it puts on a person to feel that they need to follow the extreme 100%. I get that and appreciate it, however I have talked and talked to him about the benefits of my way of eating. He has been supportive and has seen the positive changes in me, my emotional state, as well as my body. With our kids and with himself, he has adapted to ensuring that everyone gets ample protein at every meal and less, rather than more, carbs, wheat in particular. He is also open to the thought that dietary fat is extremely important, especially in the development of the children's brains. Okay....back to now... So, a couple of months ago, I started making my son drink an altered version of my morning shake every morning before school. It's been probably since before Christmas since he's had a meltdown, which used to be a daily issue. The shake is protein powder, 1 raw egg, coconut oil, butter, with boiling water. Adding a banana has been helpful too in getting him some carbs, as well as helping him to drink the shake. Poor guy. Well, he's still been fighting us on getting it down every morning (even though he admits to the shake helping make him feel better), so my husband said, "isn't there some way to get the same ingredients down him in another way?" So, yesterday my daughter and I took the same ingredients and made waffles with them!!! I'm so so so excited b/c I am very, very strict gluten-free and haven't had a waffle in about 4 years! These were so yummy!! 2 eggs 1 scoop protein powder - 30 g protein 1 T butter 1.5 T coconut oil This recipe was actually a double batch for him. Then, we schmear butter all over the waffle when we give it to him... He loved them, I loved them. Very excited!

I do! I use heavy cream, half and half, a bit of vegetable glycerin to keep it soft when it freezes, and Da Vinci's or Torani syrup to flavor and sweeten it. Sometimes I add in other things like grated chocolate, instant coffee granules, peanut butter, chopped pecans, etc. I do use an ice cream mak That would be awesome, thanks. That sounds like a good recipe too. Ai don't really like using recipes that call for all kinds of things that are hard to find. We don't have any whole foods or trader Joes and any health food stores on our town so if you pretty much can't find it at WalMart you are outta luck, unless you want to order it. What kind of ice cream maker do you like to use? The only problem might be the vegetable glycerin. I buy mine at a health food store, because the supermarket doesn't carry it. And it is critical for getting the ice cream to be the right texture. I forgot it once and it froze as hard as a rock. With the glycerin, it's soft and easy to dip. My mom can't get any where she lives either, so she orders it from amazon (she LOVES ice cream, so when she went low-carb, it was a big priority.) My ice cream maker is a Cuisinart that my hubby picked up at Costco. I can't find the exact model (they probably don't make it any more), but it's similar to this one: www.cuisinart.com/ipad/products/ice_cream/ice-21One word of caution, though. This is pretty much the ONLY Cuisinart product that we've been happy with. Everything else of this brand that we have purchased has fallen apart as soon as the warrantee expired. So you might want to go to amazon.com and read some reviews before making a purchase. The recipe is super easy. First, you have to put the bowl of your ice cream maker in the freezer for at least 24 hours, and I also put the glass carafe part of my blender in the fridge for at least an hour before I start. So it does take a little advanced planning. But then, just blend a cup each of heavy cream and half and half in your blender, along with 1/2-3/4 cup (depending on how sweet you like it) of Da Vinci's syrup, and a tablespoon of vegetable glycerin. Pour it into your ice cream maker, and 15-20 minutes later it's done. I like mine with 3/4 cup of syrup but my mom makes hers with only 1/2 cup. All the flavors that I've tried have been good, but my favorite is to use either caramel or hazelnut syrup, and add in a couple of tablespoons of instant coffee granules. Yum! I also bought some creme de menthe flavored syrup once and added in grated chocolate. That was pretty good. You can also blend in cocoa powder and peanut butter and make a "peanut butter cup" type flavor. And all of the fruit flavors that I've tried have been good as well. Basically, you can't go wrong. ;-)

Very cool that you figured out something to help your son too.
My daughter (15) drinks BPC every morning now, she loads it down with butter and HWC.

Cheryl....what is BPC? Bullet proof coffee, Coffee with butter and HWC (heavy whipping cream). Some people use mtc oil or coconut oil. Most people blend it with a stick blender, it mixes the oils in and makes it taste better. The first few times I blended it I didn't really like. I got a stick blender for Christmas, that works the best.

For bullet proof coffee, a stick blender emulsifies the ingredients so it isn't your coffee with stuff floating on the top. Which ain't bad...

Thinking, Kristin, that "only" 15k steps could be changed to "I did 15k steps today!" I did have fun. The first one was a trunk show for CAbi. Hadn't heard of the line until August. A new friend is a consultant and I held it for her to meet people in my area. The clothes are quite lovely. My girlfriends had fun, too. The second one was a gold/silver bash where one invites folks over to sell their gold/silver to a certified buyer. I had friends sell enough of their stuff that my "commission" as host, I made $400. Woo-hoo! I got a clean downstairs out of it, too, in prep for it.

A friend of mine, ct, sent me a link to this Webinar a while back. It talks about how hormones are key players in weight. Though RoBiN <3>3 and some of you guys might like to give it a listen too. Here is a link to the site. Hope my links work. I got a chance to listen to this yesterday. I had a few problems with the website but finally got thru it. I much prefer podcast to webinars. There was good about hormones and how if they are not balanced weight loss is very hard if not impossible. The frustrating thing I find is that all the stuff I find on hormones and thyroid have all this wonderful info but the solution is find a good Doctor and get meds of bioidentical hormone therapy. Simple right?

I understand what you are saying about finding good docs Cheryl. I found one in Houston (about 100 miles from me) that I pay dearly for. We are still dialing in my bio-identical hormones. I did thyroid for a while but took myself off of it after a year as I continue me N=1 experiment. I didn't start on this part of the journey for weight loss, it was I wasn't functioning hardly at all. I thought something was morally wrong with me. It is the progesterone which woke up my brain within three days. I do take testosterone, too. We did estrogen for a little but it wasn't helping me.
I haven't felt different without the thyroid in the three months I have been off of it. The doc said that sometimes one gets well and doesn't need it anymore; to let her know if something changes radically and we'll experiment more.
I don't think you'll find a GP or an internist who knows this stuff as part of a typical practice. Look for someone who specializes. I vaguely recall that Suzanne Somers was keeping a list, or one could find a list, on one of her websites. Don't remember it right off hand but she's easiest for you to find online. I have seen some other lists. If where they are bubbles up in my brain, I will let you know.
My doctor that I see does not take insurance at all. They have chosen, years ago, to focus on patients and not on filling insurance papers and building their practice to fit the medical model that would help them get payment from the insurance companies. They are happy to provide the needed info for patients to seek reimbursement from their own insurance company. I didn't find Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas willing to reimburse me. For insurance companies, the main thing is to keep from approving expenses as much as possible as they are a profit-making company, not a charitable organization. That idea keeps me from going into the "they oughts".
The initial visit was quite expensive though follow up visits are reasonable. I find every penny worth it. These folks provide an extraordinary experience.

rejoicealways8 Thanks Pam, That gives me some encouragement. I did find a registered pharmacist that was listed at the ZRT website. Her office is only 30 minutes away and in the mountains instead of the city. That is a plus because I cannot handle the stress of driving in the city. I sent her an email so I am hoping to hear back something positive. I was worried about not having insurance but it looks like most of these places don't take insurance anyway. LOL that is fine, I guess I could look at it like I would rather pay them directly than pay big insurance premium.

I knew that it was nominal for some people but the gist of the article is that there are far more exceptions than generally recognized. Most importantly, perhaps, is that normal temps trend down as we age and an elderly person can have a fever that is not recognized because while it is in fact a fever state for them it is not recognized because it falls within the nominal normal temp range.
