I rarely see ground beef for less than $2.50 per pound and the regular price is $3.50 or more. Very lean ground beef is often the cheapest, so I'll buy the kind that is 93% lean when it's on sale and cook it in bacon grease. We have a little store around here that actually still cuts and grinds most of their own beef. They put ground beef on sale every so often, especially holidays. We can get it for $1.98 a lb and the next day they mark it to 1.78. That is when I buy it. I watch for the sale.

135.5 today--but it's from sore muscles. I learned a valuable lesson this week. When your physical therapist threatens to make you wish you were home instead of at PT and you say "Bring it," you should be prepared for the consequences. I swear, every muscle group from my lower back down is in pain. And it really feels pretty good

I just read an interesting blog post about the controversy over obesity being labeled as a disease by the AMA. I tend to agree that the kind of obesity which stems from childhood should be classified as a disease. Obesity Is A Disease
The opposing view is that obesity is a metabolic disorder caused by years of eating too many carbs triggering insulin to store fat. That can certainly happen with some people but I don't think it's true of every person who puts on weight, or those who have been obese their whole lives. One of my close relatives was a chubby baby, grew into an overweight child, and later an obese adult. I don't know if they are insulin resistant, but they aren't diabetic and are fairly healthy in spite of their weight.

Are you going to be able to run in that upcoming event?

In fact, that was the first thing I thought when I read your post, obesity is a symptom of something else. The AMA has been a parody of itself for many years now. And Dr. Davis is exactly right that this just monetizes obesity for the pharmaceutical and surgical industry. There are some other awful consequences too like frivolous lawsuits. And you can bet there'll be some incredibly stupid legislation that gets passed over this. And with nationalized health care you'll never be free of your 'diagnosis' of this disease. I wonder what metric will be used to determine obesity for diagnosis? The horribly unscientific BMI chart?

Weigh-in this morning ... drum roll please... 186.2! Woohoo! It is not my lowest weight (from back in October) but it is only point one from matching that low back then. But the kick butt thing is I know that I have added muscle mass since I started working out. It isn't like anyone would look at me and say 'wow that guy has been working out!' but I can see the difference in my chest and arms so I know it is there.

So, do you think at this 186, you are slimmer than the original 186 from October?

Much slimmer than last time I was 186.x. When I broke into the 180s last time I remember posting that I still had a pot belly although I was very close to what my chart weight said was about right for me. That was when ct enlightened me about height, weight and *frame size*. That was when I changed my goal weight to the 170s. Frankly, I do not give a flip about chart weights for anything other than a direction to move towards and I'd be perfectly happy in the 180s if I was belly free and muscular. I mean, I am not fixated on a chart number. Well, 184.2 is a number I am fixed on for sure because that is when I break out of the 'overweight' block and into the 'healthy weight' block on FitDay heh. But I am guessing even lightly muscled and with no belly to speak of I'll be in the 170s. I also noticed the past couple of weeks that I have lost fat at the perimeter of my belly just below my rib cage. It looks a bit strange in the mirror.

so exciting to see the losses posted! love it! and congrats everyone!
yesterday went well. did IF successfully. ate btwn 7-2 i think. here is yesterdays #s (also ended up doing 2 jazz classes 545a and 645p) fat 246 protein 88 carbs 53 79.69762419 % 12.67098632 % 7.631389489 %
This morning WI was down, yay! WI at wake up was 175.4! woo hoo! bummed i forgot to WI after jazz but kinda glad cuz i don't usually forget about the scale LOL...so yeah, feeling better. went to Jazz class but only stayed 30 mins; per HR watch burned about 420 cals. Went after fasting so that I could eat later tonight. Had some SF jello pudding cups with HWC for breakfast then had 2 large eggs fried in bacon fat with about 4 pcs fried bacon. had 1/2 of an oatmeal protein bar. laid down and fell asleep for a few hours then had to go meet my mom for her birthday lunch. ordered a hamburger, no bun, came with no sides so just got the hamburger patty and could only choke down 1/2. dipped it in a bit of mustard and had 3 pickle slices w/ it. so not hungry at all. first time in FOREVER that i've felt this way. like i just didn't want to eat at all. so kinda happy about it and hope it's NK but my throat was killing me yesterday eve so took 800mg motrin and felt better this mrng took 600mg. i get strep often so praying it just goes away!
decided that really i'm just not a fan of eating out where they dont serve breakfast 24/7. it's so easy to track bacon/eggs but now i have to try and figure out the hamburger patty i ate at cheddars...so today is another one of those "best guesses" kinda day for food.

There's nothing new about the pharmaceutical and surgical industry making money off people desperate to lose weight. There's also plenty of money to be made selling diet books, as Dr. Davis himself has done. I agree there are risks in putting obesity in the disease category. I'm not crazy about the AMA either, and BMI charts are not a reliable way to determine a healthy weight. What I'm hoping to see is a shift in society's attitude towards obesity, although that could take many many years. There are a lot of people - including medical professionals - who see being fat as a personal weakness and behavioral problem. Kind of like how alcoholism used to be considered a moral failing. So in that respect, I'm in favor of classifying obesity as a disease state.

I made another taco bowl for lunch, only this time I added the corn tortilla strips to the pan with the ground beef when the meat was mostly done cooking. The tortilla strips softened up and absorbed most of the grease, so I didn't have to drain it off. I topped off the meat & tortilla strips with sour cream, salsa verde, Mexican shredded cheese blend, and half an avocado. It was really good!
