Speaking of weird yoga poses reminded me of the episode of "An Idiot Abroad" where he visited India. Have you ever seen that show? I thought the stuff that's done here in American yoga classes was crazy. I had no idea. Nah, I never did watch that. I saw the promos for it when it first came on and the premise turned me off. The idea, the contrast with other cultures, was intriguing but the marketing was too laugh at rather than laugh with iykwim. Was/is it a good show? Speaking of entertainment criticisms, I read an article a day or two ago titled something like '9 bad movie trends' and one of the items the guy had a gripe with was connectedness. I practically jumped out of my chair and romped about yelling yes! yes! right! yes! heh OMG! I am sick to death of the oh so unsubtle everything is connected trend that has been going on and getting worse for years. Now they are making entire TV series around the butterfly effect. That one with whatshisface and his boy that is on the autism spectrum? I think I made it to the third episode of witnessing the umpteenth display of whatshisface's artist rendition of pure parental adulation of their child, supposedly incredulous of what he himself has witnessed his son do the nth time right after convincing others to go along with x to have it all turn out perfectly by the end of the episode before I threw my hands in the air in disgust. As an aside, that movie Butterfly Effect was awesome! Loved it!

That cold thermogenesis stuff sounds pretty brutal to this very cold-natured woman. I think I'd rather find another way to burn those calories. I experimented with it right after I listened to the podcast compliments of the cold weather we are having. My observation was that dosing probably wasn't emphasized enough because getting cold and staying cold is not the right approach (which is what I did) lol. I'm going to try it again though. I want to bring myself to a shiver and then reheat. It was interesting that he thought it was analogous to the metabolic effect of a HIT workout where the metabolism stays ramped up for a long time after the very brief WO is concluded. I wonder, though, if it is possible to overcome the compensatory compulsion to eat everything in sight? He does it but he is an elite athlete who's normalcy is defined by beating the crap out of himself.

Great news, crappy news, and even worse news!! (Not weight related but thought I'd share) Great news: I received a VERY nice raise today at work retro to Jan 1st. It makes me feel that they really value all of my hard work! I really feel this is the place I will retire from in twenty years. You never know what the day will bring but I have never gone home bored! Awesome!!! Are the two connected? I mean, the efficacy of your push for healthy gut flora is not necessarily diminished by the infection since it could have been in progress well before the improved flora forced it to make itself known. At least it is fixed now! Water damage and plumbing repairs are almost a good reason to live in an easily replaceable cardboard box heh.

My weight has bumped back up to over 133. What's weird to me is how suddenly this happens. Two pounds in a day?!? And it has stayed that high for a couple days in a row now. It's not an amount that anyone else can SEE so I shouldn't let it get to me. Went for a run yesterday. Got my new FitBit Surge! It's a neat device and I love the interface, but I'm pretty disappointed with the accuracy. It's measurement of my heart rate was off by as much as 50 BPM! If it were off by 10, then who cares. But if it's telling me my heart rate is in the 70's when it's actually in the 120's then what is the point of having it at all? And I did the same run that I always do, which I know to be 1.8 miles long. It said it was 1.5. And the device has a GPS, so it should be highly accurate - it is not just guessing based on number of steps. My Garmin GPS, with which I have done that run more than 50 times, always gave me a result of either 1.77, 1.78, or 1.79. I'm going to send a note to FitBit customer service today and ask if this level of (in)accuracy is typical or if I got a bum device. Yeah, big bounces like that are impossible to account for with CICO which is why I am so gungho on holistics. That thing has got to be defective. No way athletes would be so jazzed about it if it were that inaccurate.

Yea! The scale was nice to me today: 139.6. This .2 pounds away from a total of three pounds since WI on Wednesday. I am paying attention to amounts--though not weighing, measuring, counting. Yea! And it is stretching day. How nice is that.

I did see The Butterfly Effect movie, though, and I really liked it.

My husband used to do a ton of outdoor winter sports, and he can certainly attest that getting cold and staying cold makes you ravenously hungry. He says that food never tastes as good as it does after a day of winter hiking or skiing.

No way athletes would be so jazzed about it if it were that inaccurate. My weight climbed a bit more today. I went to barre class yesterday for the first time in quite awhile, and wore the new FitBit. It gave me MUCH more realistic and believable numbers on the heart rate that time (though I didn't wear my old heart rate monitor to compare). So it's possible that I was jarring it around too much on the run to get an accurate reading. I'll try tightening the strap next time to see if that does the trick. Of course, that doesn't explain the inaccurate reading that the GPS gave me!

And I have reason to believe my appetite control still doesn't work when I go off plan which effectively puts the cold/shiver tests on hold. I've been experimenting with keeping carbs under 100g this past week but calories are through the roof and, of course, my weight is creeping up.

It's great of you to share your experiences in fiddling with what you eat Darin. I couldn't do that and enjoy hearing about yours.
I am at that point where I almost skipped even a stretching day which would lead to more skipping no doubt. In the end I did do them, two sets, and have already done a little stretching this morning. An endurance day today, with several planky things which I am not up to doing well, or barely even. Those have to do with picking one hand off the floor. Oh I do attempt them, it is almost comical. My weigh-in was the same as yesterday. All good.

Yesterday's numbers: Cals 1041 Fat 70.73 Carbs 46.45 Prot 26.45
No WI
Felt really prowly in the kitchen last night. I just couldn't decided what I was craving. Eventually I just walked out and sat down. I see now my protein was way to low. That's what I was missing. Feeling bloaty today so no weigh in. I'll check it tomorrow. I stayed under 100 carbs each day, and as close to 50 as I could. Weird that I lost another -.08# Saturday.
Debating on Super Bowl food. We're throwing a party (of course). I did a build your own taco-bar for the playoffs and I made myself a taco salad. I did really well, even had LC beer. I don't know what I'll make this time.

I think I did get a defective device, because even the pedometer isn't working right. So basically it's just a big clunky ugly watch! I could have purchased a much prettier watch for that price! I've got an email in to FitBit's customer service, and their reply will help me decide whether to return it for a full refund (thank goodness we bought it from REI so that is possible - if we'd bought it direct from FitBit apparently that would not be an option) or exchange it and try another one. This is the first time I've ever purchased any FitBit product, and I'm so disappointed in it. So how their customer service handles it will weigh heavily in my decision. I'm kind of wishing I'd bought a misfit instead. It doesn't have nearly as many features. But at least it looks cool!

Greta--did you make a decision about your fitbit?
The scale said another pound had found another place to live as of this morning. Yea! I am glad this is going well at the moment. I am still two pounds over where I normally freak out about the additional weight. That pound makes 4.2 gone for a week effort. That won't last terrifically long--the speed I mean--because I am "only" about 15 too heavy. Another five and I won't look like a stuffed sausage in most of my clothes and I will be able to wear them. Ha!
Abs was yesterday. I don't like those and I am glad that I could do some. The original strain pain from four weeks ago when I began has gone. Today's challenge is 60 push-ups done by the end of the day. I probably can't do one that goes all the way to the ground--with legs straight out, not from knees. How I have been doing them is going down as far as strength allows and come back up. Eventually I will make it all the way. I'd rather do the kind of modified version I am doing and experience that feeling of success rather than being unable to complete two, if that many.

I took a bite of a potato cake I wasn't supposed to have and burnt my tongue. Karma! Oh no! My daughter and I had Mexican for lunch yesterday, and even though what I ordered was low-carb, I ended up eating a few of her tortilla chips. Using the word "few" loosely here. Not sure yet what karma has in store for me for that!

Eventually I will make it all the way. I'd rather do the kind of modified version I am doing and experience that feeling of success rather than being unable to complete two, if that many. You're sweet to ask. I've been whining about that far too much, haven't I? I got an automated reply from FitBit saying that due to their unusually high volume of calls and emails it would be awhile before they could respond. So I went to REI yesterday and returned it. REI has such great customer service! They were so nice about it, and even said that they appreciated my feedback since the product was so new and "untested". And another employee took a lot of time with me to discuss the other comparable products. I didn't buy because I wanted to sleep on it, but I'm going back today to get the Misfit Shine. It doesn't do nearly as much, but I still have my Garmin GPS and HR monitor to use during my exercise sessions, and I can use the Misfit for counting steps (overall activity) and sleep monitoring (not that I really care that much, but my health insurance gives me more money in my HRA if I monitor steps, calories, and sleep). It's small and cute, which will make it more pleasant to wear/carry all the time. And it wins over similar Fitbit products for two other reasons as well: it's built tougher (metal instead of plastic, waterproof) and it uses a replaceable battery (most Fitbits have rechargeable batteries, but they only last about a year, and then the whole product goes in the trash). Congrats on your 4.2 pound loss in a week! That is amazing! I like your approach to push-ups! I've heard that even if you can do far fewer of them, it's still better to do them from the feet than from the knees, because doing them from your feet uses your entire body (core stability and whatnot) whereas knees does not. And it makes sense to just go down as far as you can, because in time that will be further and further.

Have you guys seen any of the news about this study showing a dose-dependent link between long-term use of anti-cholinergic drugs and dementia in the elderly? It has me pretty freaked out since I have been really worried about my memory and overall cognitive function, and I've been on an anti-cholinergic (benadryl) for YEARS now!
I gather that the study didn't look at benadryl (diphenhydramine) in particular, but it's in the same class of drugs. The study also didn't look at people my age. So it's possible that I'm worried about nothing. But I don't think so. They said this effect was true even at the doses that are being prescribed and sold OTC. And if it can affect the brains of 70+ year olds, I don't see why it wouldn't affect the brain of this 40+ year old.
The regimen I've been using up until now (flonase and benadryl nightly year-round plus claritin seasonally when things are even worse) has been enough to keep my allergies suppressed to a livable level. I'm switching to claritin every morning and flonase every night with no benadryl, and I doubt that's going to be enough. I skipped the benadryl last night and this morning I'm sneezing like crazy and my ears are ringing (that happens when I get congested, drives me batty).
I've tried herbs and neti pots and other "alternative" treatments and they have done absolutely NOTHING for me. I guess I'd better look into getting those allergy shots. Any other suggestions?

On allergies--taking hormones straightened up mine in a surprise-to-me side effect. The hormone doc was not surprised. She says it happens though it can't be predicted.
Cheryl used tapping that relieved hers.
I can make some suggestions for more systemic helps (essential oils) which might help the cause. Email me if you want me to send you some ideas.
Allergies are NO FUN. I haven't done much with benadryl over the years. Puts me to sleep right off.
LATER: completed 64 push-ups. tee hee.

Yeah, benadryl certainly puts me to sleep too, so I only take it at night. But it really helps. I'm definitely more congested and sneezing a lot more than I was two days ago. On the bright side, though, I'm wide awake and well rested by 5 or 5:30, whereas before I had to drag my lazy self out of bed by 7. I know that "they say" that we need 8 hours of sleep. But (without the benadryl) I swear 7 is plenty for me.

No change in the scale today. It's a cardio day (jumping jacks and high knees). I might do them or I might not as I am going to a tap class at noon today and that's much more fun as a cardio thing.
