...a bona fide carb addict, alas.
I discovered this site by accident from a post on another nutritional website. I'm so glad they posted the link! This seems like a very nice site - although I've not had a chance to explore it fully yet.
I'm 56 years old and live in FL (Gainesville ~ Gator town!). I'm a retired Vet Tech, married 34 years (unless you want to count the additional 5-yr "acquaintance" before that) to a T2D. The diabetes is a recent thing, though. He works in building systems maintenance for our local university (engineering, not mechanic'n! LOL)
I've been on a weight-loss journey for longer than I care to admit. I believe I began sometime in 2009, weighing about 375 at that time. We both go to the same endocrinologist (me just for weight loss; he for his T2D), who put us on his Rx diet which is LC and "ancestral" (real food, in other words). He leans more toward Paleo, and I more toward Primal. I love my cheese! We agree to disagree on some points. It's been a great thing for both of us, by either definition. I've lost 150 pounds (so far) and my DH is off oral meds now, and only takes insulin if his BG readings indicate he needs it.
I'm also battling an autoimmune condition, so I've lost those pounds purely without exercise since I'm stuck in a powerchair most of the time. I can get around with a walker, but that's not the same thing as exercise! I'm glad to see endorsements toward exercise not being particularly effective for weight loss. I'm proof, in any case.
Our endocrinologist would like me to get back to ketosis... but I'm having some difficulty just re-achieving LC status. My AI condition has lots of GI symptoms, which have increased recently. This makes finding appropriate foods very challenging:
- the Rx diet has plenty of restrictions, primarily in carbs
- I'm sworn off roughage by my gastroenterologist (and oh, how I'm craving veggies and salad!)
- I have quite a list of food intolerances
Consequently, I'm eating too much protein. And the only things which sometimes help GI disturbances are carbs. I'd like to say that's just an excuse... but it's not, unfortunately. I'm now in a spot where I've regained almost 20 of my hard-lost pounds and I'm angry and frustrated.
If I can manage to get back to LC I'll then target dropping into the 30-50g range my endocrinologist wants. Right now I'm struggling to stay below 100g, and having difficulty even with that. How annoying!
Anyway, that's me, so far! I'm so glad to have stumbled upon this site. I'm looking forward to meeting others here, especially anyone with "special challenges" to their nutritional plan. I'm semi-desperate for ideas!

Well Hello Vicki! Glad you found us! These people are so intelligent and give insightful advice and have helped me immensely. My only "special challenge" is my own dumb stubbornness but your journey will help us all. -Kathy

Great intro Vicki. Sounds like you have been doing great on lc. Weight is a heck of a struggle. I have gained 25 pounds in the last few months so I know just what you are talking about. This is a great group. So glad to have you here with us.

Hi Vicki!
I'm out of town at the moment, and so not checking in very often. But I wanted to at least quickly say hi and welcome!
Getting your carbs down into that 30-40 grams per day range can be tough. Once you do it, it's very rewarding! But, yeah, definitely challenging. Unfortunately for me, even at a range of 60-100 per day, I will gain weight and not feel well. I definitely have to strive for <50 to lose/maintain and feel well. But not everyone's metabolism is as messed up as mine is!
Interesting that your gastroenterologist told you to limit fiber. I have IBS and my doc told me to INCREASE fiber! I tried explaining to him that fiber makes it much, much worse, but he didn't believe me.
