We all know weight loss is about what we eat, But what else do we need to be successful in weight loss. One thing that helps me is a strong, determined mindset! The definition of Mindset is: A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person's responses to and interpretations of situations. What kind of mindset do you have? Does it change in different situations? Is your mindset focused on weight loss and what has to be done in every single situation to lose the weight? Do you use rationalization at times? I can eat that dessert, no one will know. I can always start over tomorrow. I already blew it today so I may as well enjoy myself. These are all ways we sabotage ourselves. Sometimes life gets me derailed and my mindset gets weak. That is when little doubts and sabotaging thoughts enter my mind. I have to remind myself to get back to my positive attitude and put those thoughts out of my head.
What about being strong? One definition of strong is: having great resources. Wow, we make ourselves stronger by giving ourselves resources. Coming to this forum gives us a fantastic resource, educating ourselves gives us a resource. Logging our food is a resource. Posting our logs here is a resource that keeps us accountable and a resource to others by sharing ideas. One definition of Determined is: having reached a decision, firmly resolved. We are all determined to lose weight. Sometimes our determination is strong, other times it is not.
When we have a strong, determined mindset we feel unbeatable. We know we will reach our goal and there is no question about it. We will be thin. So what helps you KEEP that strong, determined mindset?
Success? Support? Encouragement? A Positive Attitude?
What helps you?

This is great stuff! What keeps me going is remembering how absolutely awful I felt before starting NK, and how I never want to go back. Even if I only get from obese to overweight, I've come to realize that staying low carb is worth it because I feel so much better.
I used to do this every time I tried to stick to a diet, and it's such a defeatist attitude. Ideally I would never cheat, but I know myself well enough that I may slip up on occasion. That doesn't mean I should give up and find some other way to lose weight. I just have to accept the consequences of a cheat, like being knocked out of ketosis temporarily and a few lbs of water weight. It's not the end of the world and I can keep going.

One thing I think really helps me stay on plan is not having cheat food around that I like.
I know I am very lucky because there is non-LC food around the house in abundance *but* it is all stuff I either do not like or cannot eat. Mostly it is wheat based products and wheat makes me sick (headaches, heartburn, joint pain, etc) so even though that stuff is here, in my head it isn't even a temptation.

I stay away from recipes and whatnot if I'm not about to make something to eat, or else I'll find myself mysteriously hungry.

here's something I typed out for myself that is keeping me on track in a way that I can accept. I don't demand perfection from myself but these thoughts are helping me from day to day. I recently read Weston Price's book Nutrition and Physical Degeneration project Guttenberg and have compiled a simplistic and probably somewhat inaccurate precis of what I think Dr. Price was trying to get across. I wrote down what I understood from his book, boiled down into an essence that I can remember and understand myself.

Cheryl, great topic. What keeps us on track? Not wanting to fail is one reason. Feeling so much better. After reaching goal, it stuck that I'm not messing this up. Many know my history, and having food allergies can assist with not goofing up, because well, ED visits are costly...and you feel horrible, not breathing is dangerous too...but mostly, I enjoy being in control, and not having the roller coaster over and over. It took an up pattern in weight to make me pay attention, and finally I decided that caring about me was important. Taking a real inventory of my needs, vitamins/foods/movement (note Darin, I did not say exercise!!!)....and factoring in my current just into 50s age as a real factor now...then knowing that eating something that isn't good for my body does matter now. Earlier in life I used food for comfort, boredom, control issues, and if I thought no one cared but me...now I care about everything going in my body. I choose to use food as a fuel now...while yummy at times, I don't live to eat. There is a particular balance in life here, Cheryl's post is right now...determination is at the core of it...but doing it for you is a key as well. I now know that there is no such thing as an "innocent" cookie....those little puppies are deadly agents of destruction! I have also seen first hand the change in heart disease, cholestrol, moods, energy, and one friend has changed her whole life now...she has determination now too!

Directly related to the one about "I already blew my day may as well enjoy myself" - I remember hearing a podcast. I can't remember who tho. And he said "if you got a flat tire, would you Change it out/fix it, or slash the other 3?" I always think about that at tough times.

Another thing that I have done, it is kind of gross.
If there is a food that is tempting me, like salty peanuts or chips. I imagine them in a really disgusting way. I guess you guys have heard that trick. Say you love pizza, and some one is sitting near you eating it and you start to feel very tempted. Just imagine it covered in mold or maggots. Vuala no more cravings. lol

I just found this.. I don't buy into the gimmicky "Lose 5 Pounds in 16 days" thing.. but the thoughts are good.
16 Thoughts In 16 Days That Will Help You Lose 5 Pounds! By Gretchen Jack Do you believe that your mind and your thoughts have a big impact on your weight and attitude? I am a huge believer that where your mind goes…your body follows. So to help you lose 5 pounds in 3 weeks, here are thoughts you can schedule for yourself to think over the next 16 days. They WILL help you get THINNER! Thoughts: 1. I don’t have to eat it just because its on my plate. 2. BIG PORTIONS – BIG PEOPLE Small portions – small people. 3. What have I learned about my eating style today? 4. I can DO this just ONE more day. 5. What is the best alternative I can come up with, right now? 6. I will NOT let chocolate determine my self-esteem. 7. My husband is 6’1″ and I am 5’3″ – WHY do I think I could or should eat what he eats? 8. Buffets are intended for you to have choices, not to eat the whole thing! 9. If I eat this S L O W , I will really T A S T E it….and enjoy it for what it is – and NOT need more. 10. You can eat whatever you want at tonight’s party – as long as you have exercised the right to do so! 11. I know I can do this – if I really WANT to. 12. What can I do today to make me feel good about myself? 13. This is just 1 day out of my 365 day year – I can cope with it. tomorrow will be easier. 14. If I don’t take care of my weight and health – there are a lot of doctor’s and others who will gladly take my money to do it for me. 15. I never tell myself I am quitting – I only say: ” I’m taking a break, or vacation day today. It stops me from thinking it is all over. I acknowledge it is just a temporary break. Then I do not have to feel guilty over it. 16. When I get to my goal weight – I am treating myself to a spa! and pretend I am “Oprah for a day” (: She is only the richest woman in America ( at least as of this writing) Won’t you feel rich when you are at your goal weight and feeling your best?

His methods didn't work for me, but to be fair I tried them a few years ago when I worked long hours and didn't have time to listen to the CD and do the tapping every day. If I can find the CD maybe I'll give it a try again.
