Years ago, my husband used to use a point system for tracking his exercise. So, he'd designate that running a mile was 1 point, biking three miles was 1 point, whatever, and then set a goal of 40 points for the week (for example). I've been very consistent about walking and hiking for over a year now, but had trouble adding in other forms of exercise. So starting in December, I thought I would try this point system. But for me, just seeing the number of points at the end of the week was not enough of a reward! So I decided to set it up so that I could use my points to "buy" something that I want. Now, in my case, that happens to be a glass of red wine, which is my favorite treat at the end of a week. So, it's something that doesn't sabotage my efforts toward health and fitness, but also something that shouldn't be done in excess either. So for me that's working out well, but it could be anything. It doesn't have to be food/drink related at all, but could be anything you enjoy (a movie, a massage, some new music, whatever floats your boat). I just wouldn't pick something that will sabotage your efforts. A pan of brownies, for example, might not be a true reward, but a punishment in disguise. I wanted my NK plan to be part of my system as well, so I give myself one point for every meal that I stay within targets. I don't give myself a whole lot of points for hiking, since that habit is already established, but I award points more generously for new forms of exercise that are outside of my comfort zone. And as for the reward, I made it "expensive" enough that if I'm good all week, I can have one glass of wine on both Friday and Saturday evenings. But since I know from experience that my body does not handle two glasses in the same evening well, I made two glasses in one evening so expensive that I'll never be able to afford it! Just thought I'd pass this along in case anyone else might like to try it. Might come in handy for establishing new good habits and/or changing old bad ones.
