HELP!

I have been trying to get on here with not much success. I went back on, changed my user name, and finally got the e-mail so I could confirm. I was cfine on the old boards. Anyway...
I have been doing more of an Atkinish diet lately, but I want to get back to NK. The way I have been doing my protein is to measure in ounces and then converting to grams. I THOUGHT I was doing it correctly. For instance, 5ozs of fish would convert to 30 grams of protein because from my research, I thought that one ounce of fish was 6 grams. Today I decided to weigh my fish in grams because I have gotten a new scale. This almost 6oz. piece of fish was something like 120 grams!! Have I been doing this wrong?? I am so confused. When I was doing NK before, I was always in ketosis by my blood readings, but I still had to really watch my fat intake or I would gain. Was it because I was eating way too much protein by accident? Seriously, I can't imagine only being able to eat that little bit of protein for the day.
Somebody help me figure this out. Thanks, and I'm so glad I finally got on here. I have missed ya'll.

Hey cfine. Glad you got on too. You were right in the beginning. 5 oz if fish is more like 30 grams of protein. the 120 grams was just the weight of the fish, not the grams of protein in the fish.

Hi cfine The thing is, meat is not one for one protein grams. 10 ounces of meat is about 280 grams of meat is about ~70 grams of protein. So if you are just going to ballpark your protein intake then 6g per 1 ounce of meat (which is 28g of meat) is fine. But like Cheryl said, a food logger can make it a lot easier to track your protein and usually more accurately too. By the way, meat is not the only source of protein. Most veggies have some protein too which can add up if you are eating a decent amount of veggies.

There's a lot of water, fat, and other things in a piece of meat or fish. It's not 100% protein. So I agree with Cheryl that your first calculation was correct. Sorry you had trouble getting on the boards! Oops, didn't see that Darin had replied as well. Now it's just getting redundant. Sorry!

Hey cfine. Glad you got on too. You were right in the beginning. 5 oz if fish is more like 30 grams of protein. the 120 grams was just the weight of the fish, not the grams of protein in the fish. Good explanation. Fish and other types of meat are not going to have the same amount of protein by weight either. 1 oz of regular ground beef has 4.7 g protein, but 1 oz of extra lean has 5.3 g protein because there's less fat. Chicken thighs have slightly less protein than an equal amount of chicken breasts because again the fat content is different.
